Happy Summer! It’s so great to be able to say that. I’ve longed for the days to be warm, to hear the laughter of children on summer vacation fill our neighborhood, to go on family vacations, and enjoy peaceful, relaxing moments at the lake with friends. I hope you are all able to enjoy some of these moments as well.
Jesus summarizes both the costs of discipleship and its rewards in today’s Gospel. He reminds us that choosing anything with one’s whole heart has consequences and choosing life with Christ means that we might face some crossroads. But it also means great rewards.
Matthew outlines the rewards of hospitality that were offered to Jesus’ followers and that those who welcomed the disciples also welcomed him. We have many opportunities in our daily life to reach out to others, to be a welcoming presence and a sign of God’s love. When we choose to be loving and welcoming, we are showing our love for Jesus and for all people. A family spirit of hospitality is a sign of faith.
Jesus does not say that being his disciple will be easy. But he does promise that our life of discipleship will be rewarded. Let us pray that Jesus will help us make the choices that are right as we continue to learn to be his disciples.
God Bless,
Sonya Morris, Director of Faith Formation
